Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
I've never done Zumba before. Can beginners participate?

You're not the only one! Yes, Zumba is designed for both new participants and regular participants. You do not need dance or fitness experience to join a class. The class is designed as a "one size fits all." The routines and steps are simple enough that new participants can easily join while regular participants are challenged. And, of course, you're always welcome to modify the workout to suit your needs. You know your body best.

I'm not coordinated. Will I be able to follow in class?

This is probably the most commonly asked question. You bet you will. Dance or fitness experience is not required. Zumba is not about learning to dance or perfection. It's simply about moving and having fun. There is no right or wrong in class, and it is a very safe environment. That's why we call it a party! Remember, like anything new, there is a bit of a learning curve. Once you learn the basic steps, it will get easier and easier.

What should I wear and bring with me?

Dress in comfortable workout clothes, and wear runners with good support. If you own dance-fitness or jazz runners, those work well for class. However, they are not needed to do the class. If you like, you can bring a towel to wipe off sweat. Of course, don't forget to bring water!

How can I move my hips more?

Bend your knees! When you bend your knees, you allow for more hip movement. Try moving your hips side to side with your legs straight. Then, bend your knees and try it again. See the difference? And remember, your body has muscle memory. The more you do Zumba, the easier (sexier) it will be!

What type of shoes should I wear?

Regular runners with good support work just fine for Zumba. If you own dance-fitness or jazz runners, those work very well because they allow you to slide a bit. An alternative to purchasing dance-fitness shoes is to put a small piece of duck tape on the ball of your foot and on your heel.

Please do not wear slippers or any type of shoe that does not offer support. Although we are dancing, Zumba is also a fitness class so you require support for your feet. We also ask you wear runners that do not leave scuff marks on the floor.

How does Zumba Kids work?

The ZumbAtomic program has a different format than Zumba. First, the classes are based on age. We run classes for lil stars (4-7 year olds) for 45 minutes and big stars (8-12 year olds) for 1 hour.

During the class, we do a warmup, a rhythm review (e.g., salsa, cumbia) and then teach 1-3 dances (depending on the class) by reviewing the steps first, and then turning on the music. While it's not a dance class, the ZumbAtomic program allows time for kids to learn dances and feel successful. We also incorporate games, performances and a cool down.

You'll notice ZumbAtomic routines have more movements because kids require more stimulation than adults. Unlike Zumba, we do not run dance after dance for 1 hour as this is not what works best or is required for kids.

How can I get Zumba Kids at my child's school?

There's two ways you can do this. If you feel comfortable, you can approach your child's teacher and/or principal and tell them about the program. From there you can pass along our contact information to the school so we can explain the program further.

Or, you can Contact Us directly with the school's contact information, and we can work with your child's teacher and/or principal to get a program going. We can do one-time master classes, fundraisers or regular sessions. It depends on what the school is interested in. We are flexible.
